"Religion to Be a Office of Home Education—Home religion is fearfully neglected. Men and women show much involvement in foreign missions. They requite liberally to them and thus seek to satisfy their conscience, thinking that giving to the cause of God will atone for their neglect to set a right example in the domicile. Merely the home is their special field, and no excuse is accepted by God for neglecting this field."

"In as well many households prayer is neglected. Parents feel that they have no time for morn and evening worship. They cannot spare a few moments to be spent in thanksgiving to God for his arable mercies—for the blessed sunshine and the showers of rain, which cause vegetation to flourish, and for the guardianship of holy angels. They take no time to offer prayer for divine help and guidance and for the abiding presence of Jesus in the household. They go forth to labor every bit the ox or the equus caballus goes, without i thought of God or heaven. They have souls and so precious that rather than permit them to be hopelessly lost, the Son of God gave his life to bribe them; only they have trivial more [144] appreciation of his smashing goodness than have the beasts that perish."

"God celebrated the starting time marriage. Thus the establishment has for its originator the Creator of the universe. "Marriage is honorable" (Hebrews 13:4); information technology was one of the beginning gifts of God to homo, and information technology is ane of the ii institutions that, afterward the Autumn, Adam brought with him beyond the gates of Paradise. When the divine principles are recognized and obeyed in this relation, marriage is a approving; information technology guards the purity and happiness of the race, it provides for man's social needs, it elevates the concrete, the intellectual, and the moral nature."

"As time passed on, with no apparent change in nature, men whose hearts had at times trembled with fearfulness, began to be reassured. They reasoned, as many reason now, that nature is in a higher place the God of nature, and that her laws are so firmly established that God himself could not change them. Reasoning that if the bulletin of Noah were correct, nature would exist turned out of her course, they made that message, in the minds of the world, a delusion—a grand deception. They manifested their contempt for the alarm of God by doing just as they had done before the alert was given. They continued their festivities and their gluttonous feasts; they ate and drank, planted and builded, laying their plans in reference to advantages they hoped to gain in the future; and they went to greater lengths in wickedness, and in defiant condone of God's requirements, to prove that they had no fear of the Infinite One. They asserted that if there were whatever truth in what Noah had said, the men of renown—the wise, the prudent, the great men—would understand the thing."

"The smitten rock was a figure of Christ, and through this symbol the almost precious spiritual truths are taught. As the life-giving waters flowed from the smitten rock, so from Christ, "smitten of God," "wounded for our transgressions," "bruised for our iniquities" (Isaiah 53:four, 5), the stream of salvation flows for a lost race. As the stone had been once smitten, and then Christ was to be "one time offered to carry the sins of many." Hebrews nine:28. Our Saviour was not to be sacrificed a second fourth dimension; and it is only necessary for those who seek the blessings of his grace to enquire in the name of Jesus, pouring along the heart'southward desire in penitential prayer. Such prayer will bring before the Lord of hosts the wounds of Jesus, and so will catamenia forth anew the life-giving blood, symbolized by the flowing of the living water for Israel. [412]"

"Those who are quieting a guilty censor with the idea that they tin change a class of evil when they cull, that they tin can trifle with the invitations of mercy, and still be again and once more impressed, take this course at their peril. They think that after casting all their influence on the side of the bully rebel, in a moment of utmost extremity, when danger compasses them nigh, they will change leaders. Merely this is not so easily done. The feel, the education, the discipline of a life of sinful indulgence, has and so thoroughly molded the graphic symbol that they cannot so receive the image of Jesus. Had no light shone upon their pathway, the instance would have been different. Mercy might interpose, and requite them an opportunity to accept her overtures; only after light has been long rejected and despised, it will exist finally withdrawn."

"What a contrast between the class of Isaac and that pursued by the youth of our time, even among professed Christians! Young people too often feel that the bestowal of their angel is a matter in which self solitary should be consulted—a affair that neither God nor their parents should in whatever wise command. Long before they accept reached manhood or womanhood they call up themselves competent to make their ain pick, without the aid of their parents. A few years of married life are usually sufficient to show them their error, but often too late to prevent its baleful results. For the same lack of wisdom and self-command that dictated the hasty choice is permitted to aggravate the evil, until the wedlock relation becomes a galling yoke. Many have thus wrecked their happiness in this life and their promise of the life to come up. If there is any subject which should be advisedly considered and in which the counsel of older and more experienced persons should be sought, it is the bailiwick of marriage; if always the Bible was needed equally a counselor, if ever divine guidance should be sought in prayer, it is before taking a stride that binds persons together for life."

"The Saviour made use of this symbolic service to direct the minds of the people to the blessings that he had come to bring them. "In the last solar day, that neat twenty-four hours of the feast," his voice was heard in tones that rang through the temple courts, "If whatsoever human thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall menstruum rivers of living water." "This," said John, "spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive." John 7:37-39. The refreshing water, welling up in a parched and barren land, causing the desert place to blossom, and flowing out to requite life to the perishing, is an emblem of the divine grace which Christ lone tin can bestow, and which is as the living water, purifying, refreshing, and invigorating the soul. He in whom Christ is abiding has within him a never-failing fountain of grace and strength. Jesus cheers the life and brightens the path of all who truly seek him. His love, received into the heart, will spring up in proficient works unto eternal life. And not merely does it bless the soul in which it springs, just the living stream volition menstruum out in words and deeds of righteousness, to refresh the thirsting around him."

"While the sinner cannot save himself, he still has something to do to secure salvation. "him that cometh to Me," says Christ, "I will in no wise bandage out." John vi:37. Only we must come to him; and when we apologize of our sins, we must believe that he accepts and pardons us. Faith is the gift of God, but the power to exercise information technology is ours. Faith is the manus by which the soul takes hold upon the divine offers of grace and mercy."

"The greatest want of the world is the want of men-men who will not be bought or sold; men who in their inmost souls are truthful and honest; men who exercise not fear to call sin past its right name; men whose censor is equally true to duty as the needle to the pole; men who will correspond the right though the heavens fall."

"Nothing only the righteousness of Christ can entitle us to ane of the blessings of the covenant of grace. There are many who have long desired and tried to obtain these blessings, but have not received them, because they take cherished the idea that they could do something to make themselves worthy of them. They have not looked away from self, assertive that Jesus is an all-sufficient Saviour. Nosotros must not think that our own merits will save us; Christ is our only hope of salvation. "For there is none other name nether sky given amidst men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:12. When we trust God fully, when we rely upon the merits of Jesus as a sin-pardoning Saviour, we shall receive all the help that nosotros tin desire. Permit none look to cocky, as though they had ability to save themselves. Jesus died for united states of america because we were helpless to do this. In him is our hope, our justification, our righteousness. When we see our sinfulness we should not despond and fright that we take no Saviour, or that he has no thoughts of mercy toward united states. At this very time he is inviting us to come to him in our helplessness and be saved. [432]"

"The flesh was to be eaten. Information technology is not enough even that we believe on Christ for the forgiveness of sin; we must by faith be constantly receiving spiritual strength and nourishment from him through his discussion. Said Christ, "Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his claret, ye have no life in y'all. Whoso eateth My mankind, and drinketh My claret, hath eternal life." John 6:53, 54. And to explain his meaning he said, "The words that I speak unto yous, they are spirit, and they are life." Verse 63. Jesus [278] accepted his Father'southward police force, wrought out its principles in his life, manifested its spirit, and showed its beneficent power in the eye. Says John, "The Word was made mankind and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the celebrity as of the but begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." John 1:14. The followers of Christ must be partakers of his experience. They must receive and assimilate the word of God so that information technology shall become the motive power of life and action. By the power of Christ they must exist changed into his likeness, and reflect the divine attributes. They must eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God, or there is no life in them. The spirit and work of Christ must become the spirit and work of his disciples."

"his people Israel should do. It was their own evil heart of unbelief, controlled by Satan, that led them to hide their light, instead of shedding information technology upon surrounding peoples; it was that same bigoted spirit that caused them either to follow the iniquitous practices of the infidel or to close themselves away in proud exclusiveness, as if God'due south love and care were over them solitary. As the Bible presents two laws, 1 changeless and eternal, the other provisional and temporary, so in that location are 2 covenants. The covenant of grace was first made with man in Eden, when after the Autumn at that place was given a divine promise that the seed of the woman should bruise the serpent's head. To all men this covenant offered pardon and the assisting grace of God for hereafter obedience through faith in Christ. It also promised them eternal life on status of fidelity to God's police force. Thus the patriarchs received the hope of salvation."

"The claim and so often put forth, that Christ inverse the Sabbath, is disproved by His own words. In His sermon on the mountain He said: "Think non that I am come to destroy the police, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or 1 tittle shall in no wise pass from the police, till all be fulfilled."

"The angels prostrated themselves at the feet of their Commander and offered to get a cede for man. Only an angel's [65] life could not pay the debt; only he who created man had power to redeem him. Even so the angels were to have a part to deed in the plan of redemption. Christ was to be made "a little lower than the angels for the suffering of expiry." Hebrews ii:nine. As he should take human being nature upon him, his strength would not be equal to theirs, and they were to minister to him, to strengthen and soothe him under his sufferings. They were too to be ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who should be heirs of salvation. Hebrews ane:14. They would guard the subjects of grace from the power of evil angels and from the darkness constantly thrown around them by Satan."

"The plant grows by receiving that which God has provided to sustain its life. It sends down its roots into the earth. It drinks in the sunshine, the dew, and the rain. It receives the life-giving backdrop from the air. And then the {67} Christian is to grow past co-operating with the divine agencies. Feeling our helplessness, nosotros are to improve all the opportunities granted us to gain a fuller experience. As the plant takes root in the soil, so we are to have deep root in Christ. As the plant receives the sunshine, the dew, and the rain, we are to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit. The work is to be done "non by might, nor by power, only by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts." Zech. iv:6. If nosotros keep our minds stayed upon Christ, He will come unto u.s.a. "as the rain, as the latter and sometime rain unto the globe." Hosea 6:3. As the Sun of Righteousness, He will arise upon u.s. "with healing in His wings." Mal. four:ii. We shall "grow as the lily." Nosotros shall "revive as the corn, and grow every bit the vine." Hosea 14:v, vii. By constantly relying upon Christ as our personal Saviour, we shall abound up into Him in all things who is our head."

"But in Joseph and Daniel, in Moses and Elijah, and many others, we have noble examples of the results of the true program of living. Like faithfulness today will produce like results. "By this rite they were pledged to fulfill, on their role, the conditions of the covenant made with Abraham. They were not to contract marriages with the heathen; for past and then doing they would lose their reverence for God and his holy police force; they would be tempted to engage in the sinful practices of other nations, and would exist seduced into idolatry. God conferred great honor upon Abraham. Angels of sky walked and talked with him as friend with friend. When judgments were virtually to exist visited upon Sodom, the fact was not subconscious from him, and he became an intercessor with God for sinners. His interview with the angels presents also a beautiful case of hospitality."

"Encourage Children to Earn Their Ain Coin—Many a kid who lives out of the city can accept a little plot of state where he can learn to garden. He tin exist taught to make this a means of securing coin to requite to the cause of God. Both boys and girls can engage in this work; and it will, if they are rightly instructed, teach them the value of money and how to economize. Information technology is possible for the children, too raising money for missionary purposes, to be able to help in buying their own clothes, and they should be encouraged to do this."

"Nadab and Abihu would never have committed that fatal sin had they not start go partially intoxicated by the free use of wine. They understood that the most careful and solemn preparation was necessary before presenting themselves in the sanctuary, where the divine Presence was manifested; but by intemperance they were disqualified for their holy part. Their minds became [362] confused and their moral perceptions dulled and so that they could not discern the deviation between the sacred and the mutual. To Aaron and his surviving sons was given the warning: "Exercise non drink wine nor strong drink, g, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye dice: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations: and that ye may put divergence between holy and unholy, and between unclean and make clean; and that ye may teach the children of State of israel all the statutes which the Lord hath spoken." The use of spirituous liquors has the consequence to weaken the trunk, confuse the mind, and debase the morals. It prevents men from realizing the sacredness of holy things or the binding force of God's requirements. All who occupied positions of sacred responsibility were to exist men of strict temperance, that their minds might be clear to discriminate between right and incorrect, that they might possess firmness of principle, and wisdom to administer justice and to evidence mercy. The same obligation rests upon every follower of Christ. The apostle Peter declares, "Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people." 1 Peter 2:9. We are required by God to preserve every power in the all-time possible condition, that we may render acceptable service to our Creator. When intoxicants are used, the same furnishings will follow as in the example of those priests of State of israel. The censor will lose its sensibility to sin, and a process of hardening to iniquity will most certainly take identify, till the common and the sacred will lose all difference of significance. How can we then come across the standard of the divine requirements?" "Know ye non that your torso is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in y'all, which ye take of God, and ye are non your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your trunk, and in your spirit, which are Gods." 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. "Whether therefore ye swallow, or beverage, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians x:31. To the church of Christ in all ages is addressed the solemn and fearful alert, "If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." one Corinthians iii:17. "In the hot summer noontide the patriarch was sitting in his tent door, looking out over the quiet landscape, when he saw in the distance three travelers budgeted. Before reaching his tent, the strangers halted, as if consulting as to their course. Without waiting for them to solicit favors, Abraham rose quickly, and as they were obviously turning in another direction, he hastened after them, and with the utmost courtesy urged them to award him by tarrying for refreshment. With his own easily he brought water that they might launder the dust of travel from their anxiety. He himself selected their food, and while they were at rest nether the cooling shade, an entertainment was made ready, and he stood respectfully beside them while they partook of his hospitality. This act of courtesy God regarded of sufficient importance to record in his word; and a thousand years later information technology was referred to by an inspired campaigner: "Exist not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some accept entertained"
